Beocity is the only fully automatizied site in Yugoslavia and the only company who's complete activity (management, bookkeeping etc.) is done on the Internet. Beocity Internet Credit Service, as a part of that site, might be a solution of the problem in doing business on the Internet under current conditions and circumstances in Yugoslavia.

Tell us when and how Beocity site was made? Beocity was produced exactly three years ago - in November 1996. The whole concept of our firm was built around the http://www.beocity.com/ site, which, actually, had few purposes: establishing communication by its contents in order to attract potential hosting users, WEB site design and application software for doing business over Internet. Planned contents of a cultural nature, soon became second of our interests, since our users were most interested in domestic and foreign political affairs. Instead of previously planned publishing cultural events, we had to start publishing daily news, relaying on different newspapers (many of which are not published any more), what took a lot of effort three years ago. The increasing number of users had to be provided with regular reports, which was a very demanding job for only two member staff. What had to be done in the following two years, was developing a software capable of maintaining the site on its own. And we have managed to achieve that, when Beocity became the first site of such contents which can function by itself and achieve enviable results among the most visited sites from this area..

What do You think attracted so many users in such a short time? As I have already said, accuracy and the fresh contents of the site have made Beocity location start-up page of main interest for many users, both in our country and abroad. Beside regular daily news reports, Beocity had its regular associates. Also, only two weeks upon activating the site, we came up with the idea of providing our users with interactivity offered by WEB technology and, in that manner, developed "reader's interview" with political leaders. That is when Beocity became the first site, which in 1996, had interviews broadcasted live in RealAudio and RealVideo format. Latter on, we have made interviews with different guests, like our famous musicians, which have been presented in "Heineken rock interview" segment, still edited by Dejan Cukic http://www.beocity.com/dejanc/. Some of our other associates were renowned artists from different cultural fields: for our readers, Svetozar Cvetkovic made theatre and film art more familiar through his articles, while the writer Ljubivoje Rsumovic kept our users regularly informed on events from Belgrade intellectual circles. Humorous reports from streets of Belgrade by Radman Selmic were made even funnier by Aleksandar Klas' caricatures... All articles by the above artists and associates are still accessible through Beoarchive.

Beocity site is, for now, the only location in our country, which offers crediting and real Internet access time purchase on the Internet. What are the advantages of this service? I have to correct you here. At present, Beocity does not offer credit services, but the possibility of postponed paying for services and merchandise from distribution and sales programme of the Beocity shop. Soon, many of distribution programs of our partner firms are expected to become as operational as ours are.

Why do we need Beocity Internet credit service on the http://credit.beocity.com/ address? Beocity Internet credit service was a necessity, since electronic payments were impossible in Yugoslavia. In the process of developing the system, our starting point was providing our user to, at least, activate the service for Internet access from his/her personal or office address. The reason for not choosing domestic credit cards to be the means of payment was, that the service payment for Internet access with the leading providers in Yugoslavia had been analysed and results had shown that, from almost 10.000 users, only 0.1% had made their payments by using cheques, and only 0.02% by using some of the available credit cards. That is why we decided to enable our users to use the Cash already spent, in a different way; on the basis of existing payments, the system calculates potential "credit" status and, accordingly, the user has an opportunity to activate wanted number of hours for Internet access, with the possibility of postponed paying in the way most suitable for the user: on one of the Beocity locations, by postal order, cheque or credit card. In that way, we have provided comfort for all our users , and not just the privileged minority who have the credit cards. All those who pay off their debt in time, are granted with "credit line" additional points, and thus, greater benefits in crediting different services or purchase on Beocity partner-firms' WEB sites on YU Internet. That is how users' base was made to be as large as users' basis in the most advanced crediting institutions in the country, offering numerous possibilities in the near future.

Among other things, Beocity offers specialised service in making most demanding automatic presentations. These sites provide full control for the owner, whether he is an Internet professional or an amateur user. Could you give us an example of such automatization? Exactly, Beocity Web team works on developing its customers' sites. We have basically achieved our aim set in 1996. and, with minimal investment but a lot of hard work became serious competitor on Yu Internet, setting technological standards in many fields. Sites made by us function on their own or are controlled by the owners in the way that they specify. The contents of sites signed by Beocity Web design team are "ready for use" packages, which let the buyer add new data by using simple Windows and Web based applications, where the client for interaction with database on the Web is any of popular Web readers (Netscape Navigator or MS Internet Explorer). The best examples of such applications are numerous segments of Beocity site itself, but, in this context, it might be better to say more about FoNet PHOTO service on http://www.fonet.co.yu/foto/ address. The service started working in March, 1997., and ever since has managed to distribute over 45.000 photographs, both in the country and abroad, by using the Beocity software. Another interesting example is ComTrade dealers' service, where the company sales through Windows applications has full control over a few hundred dealers and their distribution in Serbia, handling data on WEB servers located on BeocityNET servers in Belgrade and The United States. Also, a few days ago, new software has been released, for data processing and distribution of written material of News Agency SRNA from Republic of Srpska. Interesting point is, that the above software demands no administrative and technical staff on its location. This being the case, saves considerable funds to our users. The administrative technical staff of Beocity itself consists of only one person, who, by using advanced applications developed by Beocity software production, maintains dozens of active Web servers for which we are responsible, and almost a hundred of virtual servers hosted by BeocityNet WEB hosting service.

What was happening with Beocity site during the war? Working on Beocity site was quite a challenge during the war. Surprised by sudden frequent visit, we had to, simultaneously, modify technologies for generating the database contents, which is automatically filled with new material from FoNet and SRNA News Agencies. The pre-war technology was not sufficient for five times enhanced visit (server access statistics can be found on :http://www.beocity.com/ad info/). Not only did we solve the problem, but enlarged the contents by news translations. For this, we had unreserved help from volunteer interpreters, who were getting news simultaneously with their publishing on the server, translated them and sent back to the server for further processing. During two and a half months of war, over 6.000 independent news articles were successfully published, while Beocity Web server was constantly active, showing over five million pages. Of course, none of this would be possible without prompt and efficient reaction of our computer programmers, who easily adapted to newly occurred circumstances. The Beocity Web site maintenance software is the example of a quality software, since it has a status of servicing the most visited YU WWW location http://www.beocity.com/, and is still functioning as a virtual server with minimum costs.

Would you comment on Yugoslav Web sites before, during and after the war? For YU Internet, politics is equivalent to sex contents in the world and, thus, visits to our site were much frequented during the war, comparing to the situation before and after. Growing YU Diaspora, as a consequence of the situation in our country during the last ten years, might be the reason for such a rich contents of YU sites. Unfortunately, there is less real business managing, due to the payment problems. We hope that Beocity Internet credit service is the solution.

In your opinion, how can, in our situation, a site make profit? Electronic business managing will become our reality, sooner or latter, so our aim is to persist in providing necessary starting point. It is hard to say when we can expect changes, but it is inevitable to start using Internet as the rest of the world does. What we have achieved until now is, most certainly, an excellent base for future development. One could call it a platform or, even, infrastructure for what is to be done in order to make a living out of Internet in Yugoslavia. With the constantly advancing technology, it is important to stay informed on trends and competition and, act appropriately. Being a provider is a segment which can make profit even now, if there is a good business policy, while the other creative services can turn to be profitable on a higher level than home production where Yu Internet is currently developing, only for a minority. Beocity has managed to become serious competitor for "big players" on our market, by continuous research and use of new technologies, with minimum expenses. Projects which we are preparing will show if this was a good decision. The fact is that ten employees in our firm owe their status to Beocity Web designer and Web programming team, who have, in the first three years, carried the burden of the development on their keyboards.

What would you suggest to those who are now starting their Internet adventure, either as surfers or as web masters? For surfers, I would suggest not to hurry, since Internet contents are there to stay, forever. Also, Internet is no longer an adventure, it is a way of life, both for those who believe in it and for those who do not. Internet will be an unavoidable part of our every-day life, as common as public transport is today. One might say that, although Internet is rapidly developing, it is still on the level of the car industry at the beginning of the century. That is why all those interested in participating and using the infrastructure may feel free to invest their ideas and spare time in professional use of this technology. There is room for everyone; no need to be afraid that over-using something as new as this (which is always harder than dealing on a familiar market) might "make your friends and relatives give up on you, or that the only sex you will ever have is the virtual one", as a previous webmaster you talked to said. Although working very hard, our team still has usual friendly relationships with friends and relatives, as well as enough time to relax and enjoy.
