I admit it, I'm probably too much of a liberal feminist for most people's tastes around here. I believe that both men and women should discuss birth control before having sex with a partner, because more often then not, they don't and somebody ends up with something they don't want. I also believe women should protect themselves by having condoms around, since men often "conveniently" forget.

For whatever reasons, it appears that both sexes seem more willing to take the risks than to have that "frank" discussion. Both men and women I've spoken to here admit that they don't worry too much about pregnancy or STD. The reasons? "If I get pregnant, I would at least have some responsibility. After all, I can't get a job," said one female university graduate. "Birth control pills will put hair on your upper-lip and make women fat," said one 26-year old male.

These two statements say everything about Serbia's conditions in the late 1990's. Sex education and protected sex are on the bottom of the priority list. What is there to educate Serbs about and from what do we need protection, you might ask....
The general excuses for having unprotected sex makes me feel as if I'm living in some time warp. a. everybody they sleep with is the boy or girl next door (Ha!) b. condoms are uncomfortable for men, and therefore undesirable (does anybody think about how uncomfortable an abortion is?) c. the woman are practicing the rhythm method, which is believed to be an effective form of birth control (but proven by science to be the least effective) and c. AIDS is something other countries have to be worried about, not Serbia.

It would be nice if all those things were true, if sex could be free of latex and psychological complications. Maybe everybody would enjoy themselves more and sex could be more....natural. But the reality is much different and not even Serbs can afford at this point to operate under old myths.

In the U.S. we learn about sex from school, the media, from friends and our parents. Sometimes the message is incomplete and needs to be complimented by experience. However, the facts are out there in mass quantities and there's little chance that you can avoid them. After six months in Belgrade, I've seen little AIDS education, no anonymous AIDS testing centers, virtually no condom ads, and no public discourse on the subject. It is as if the country is waiting for there to be an epidemic before responding.
Before moving to Belgrade, friends who had spend time here before the war told me wild tales of promiscuity --leading me to believe that most of the generation under 35 was probably sharing the same blood type. This was the cosmopolitan, well-traveled crowd who grew up in Belgrade's most liberal period of the 1980's before AIDS entered into the global vocabulary. But today people can't afford to be ignorant. Even in Serbia, AIDS cases already number about 6,000 and those are only the reported cases. How many people make the calculations and assess the risks before jumping into bed with somebody, especially considering how many drug users there are here. The problem is not here yet, many argue.
If Serbs need to feel safe against AIDS-ridden America, Western Europe, Africa and Asia . Fine. They can live happily under that illusion. But soon, I presume, the conditions will change and westernization will not just mean the chance to buy Diet Coke at every kiosk. Belgrade and other cities in Yugoslavia could become the next ex-pat havens once privatization takes hold and the investors, consultants and other super-marketers start marching in. Imagine a large, young and single expat population and a new crop of nightspots catering to young, capitalist wanna-be yuppies, not to mention a booming sex industry catering to rich, bored businessmen. Are Serbs prepared to deal with the liberal sexual attitudes and behavior that might follow with Westernization, not to mention IV drug use and prostitution?
There are a few who are. One 2nd year medical student recently took up an initiative from his social medicine class to educate young teens about AIDS prevention. So far he has spoken to one school. "The point is to get them using condoms when they begin their sex lives so they don't have to compare the feeling'" he said. "That is the problem with our generation. They know too well their sex lives without them." He used a banana to demonstrate how to use condoms and he explained that AIDS is not something limited only to homosexuals and IV drug users anymore. The teens listened intently, he said.
If Serbs my age aren't getting the message, I hope most of them are leaving circulation and becoming faithfully married by now.
